Sweet Smell of Success
Through June 6
Claire Trevor Theatre
Normally, we only include new musicals in the Festival. But there are musicals that didn’t make it first time around that deserve a second chance. This is one.
Broadway, 1952, glamour capital of the universe. The show is based on the 1957 movie of the same name, which tells the story of powerful newspaper columnist J.J. Hunsecker who uses his power and connections to control everything around him. Set against a backdrop of the glamorous 1950’s New York, various love situations are served up sumptuously in a glorious jazz score that underpins the longing, desperation, deceit and sweet lovemaking and death for which New York High Society was infamous.
Music by the late Marvin Hamlisch, Lyrics by Craig Carnelia, Book by John Guare
Directed by Myrona DeLaney
Choreographed by Andrew Palermo
